On a job tonight. Which I think you know. Met a man who claims to know you.

He was typing out more when a picture and some text came in.

The picture was of the man waiting politely off to the side, the same man Karl had seen in the precinct.

Arjun Khatri. If it’s anyone but Arjun, get yourself clear as safely as possible.

Think we’re all good, thanks.

Karl put the handheld away, but not before he wiped the conversation. That done, he turned back to Arjun and nodded.

“You were here with Dawkins and Harken, yes?” the man said, as if they’d never paused their discussion. “Let me deal with them. Ah, here we are.”

Sure enough, Friendly and Harken were weaving their way through the crowd, two sets of eyes locked on Karl.

“About time we headed out, Gramps,” Friendly said. “You can tell me all about your impressions on the walk home.” His gaze shifted as he realized Karl was not alone. “Khatri. So you do know the old man?” He sounded both surprised and wary.

“I deal with a lot of informants,” Arjun said smoothly. “This fellow found a serial purse-snatcher for me a few months back. We dealt exclusively over calls then, so I’d never met him face to face. Until the other day, of course. He caught me by surprise then, but we’ve cleared it all up now. I’ve just been getting his impressions of our little gathering myself. In fact, I was planning to escort him home when I saw him here alone. Didn’t realize he was here with you two.”

Friendly looked very unhappy about this, but then Harken stepped in.

“I’ve got a date with a pint or three,” he said to his partner. “If you’d care to make it a double-date, I say we leave the old man here to Khatri and go on about our evening.” It didn’t sound like much of a suggestion, the way he said it.

Friendly’s consideration seemed interminable, but at last, perhaps realizing he was outflanked by the other officers against him, the man nodded.

“Never been one to turn down an offer to pick up one of my shifts,” he laughed. He fixed Karl with a firm gaze. “We’ll talk soon, you and I. This was just the first step. Don’t forget who brought you here.” They turned to go.

“Oh, and Harken?” Arjun called out off-handedly. “Stop by my apartment on your way back from the bar. I have the file you’ve been looking for, but it’s not on me. Didn’t realize I’d be running into you here.” He patted his pockets in a show of ineffectuality.

Harken looked back and nodded, seeming impatient to be getting on with the drinking, and the pair finally left.

“Come on,” Arjun said, after giving his fellow officers a chance to build up a lead. “Let’s walk and talk, shall we?”
